A fire in the newborn nursery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad killed 14 babies early Wednesday, according to the federal government, hospital officials and reporting by the Associated Press and Reuters. One infant was rescued.
Officials initially linked the fire to an explosion involving an air-conditioning unit, but investigators appointed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were still examining the cause and the hospital’s fire-safety response. The inquiry means the preliminary explanation should not be treated as a final finding. Punjab’s provincial government separately ordered health authorities to review fire-safety systems and emergency readiness at medical facilities.
