Students have demonstrated in multiple Indonesian cities over the government response to smoke from forest and peatland fires. The Associated Press reported a Friday rally in Palangkaraya and protests in more than half a dozen cities; Reuters also reported student demonstrations and said rainfall had not yet been enough to extinguish the fires. Indonesia’s Antara news agency, citing the Health Ministry, reported 333,470 acute respiratory infection cases in seven affected provinces since mid-August. Those are ministry-reported cases, not a verified count of illnesses caused solely by haze. ASEAN’s regional haze-monitoring centre has activated its highest alert level for the southern ASEAN region.
