Texas election officials have referred 33 cases involving possible voting by noncitizens to local prosecutors, according to a September 15 statement from the secretary of state. The referrals came from a review comparing voter-registration records with federal immigration data.

A referral is not a finding of guilt. County prosecutors must determine whether the evidence supports charges, and people identified in the review retain the right to contest the underlying records. The state said it would continue checking registrations and sharing potential cases with local authorities.

The Associated Press reported that the number represents a very small share of Texas voters and noted the broader national debate over how frequently noncitizen voting occurs.
