The Texas General Land Office has opened a request for industry proposals covering geothermal energy, small modular nuclear reactors and natural-gas power plants on state-owned land. Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said the initiative is intended to identify projects that could add reliable generation and produce revenue for the Permanent School Fund.

The request is an early market-sounding step, not approval of a specific project. Any development would still face site reviews, commercial negotiations and applicable state and federal permitting.

The land office has already established a framework for geothermal leasing and says it is assessing how emerging technologies could use the state’s mineral and surface assets.
