NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation have begun releasing calibrated data from the NISAR Earth-observing satellite on a continuing basis. NASA says all U.S. L-band measurements collected since June 17 are now entering the public archive, while India has started distributing S-band products through its Bhoonidhi portal.\n\nNISAR is the first free-flying satellite to carry two synthetic-aperture radar instruments with different wavelengths. The longer L-band signal can pass through vegetation and some surface material, while the S-band instrument provides complementary observations. Together they are designed to measure changes in land and ice and support research on forests, wetlands, earthquakes and landslides.\n\nAn early L-band image shows Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a mountaintop surrounded by moving ice in East Antarctica. Crevasses appear as sharp green lines because the radar signal interacts differently with fractured and smoother surfaces. NASA scientists nicknamed the shape “the hummingbird,” but its scientific value comes from the structural detail that radar reveals beneath snow and ice.\n\nNASA says NISAR surveys nearly all of Earth’s land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days and can generate dozens of terabytes of data daily.
