The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), with Switzerland and Pakistan, launched its Centre of Excellence forum on AI, peace and security at UN headquarters on Oct. 22. The initiative is intended to bring governments, industry, researchers and civil-society groups into continuing discussions about AI’s security implications, including military applications.

UNIDIR describes the forum as a platform for analysis, consultation and practical policy guidance—not a treaty, regulator or new binding limits on military AI. The launch follows UNIDIR director Robin Geiss’s warnings about AI’s growing use in areas such as warning systems, intelligence and reconnaissance, and the need to preserve human judgment. Those are policy concerns, not evidence that AI autonomously controls nuclear weapons.
