Nigeria’s two main labour centres, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, said talks with federal officials in Abuja on Oct. 22 ended without an agreement. The unions said the government delegation lacked authority to negotiate; that is the unions’ account of the meeting.
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27. Labour demands include lower petrol prices, reopening minimum-wage negotiations, agreed tax relief and unresolved public-sector allowances. Union leaders say affiliates should prepare for possible nationwide action if talks make no progress. No new strike has been called.
