Nigeria and the Niger Basin Authority convened member-state representatives and development partners in Abuja to review an in-depth financial analysis for a proposed Regional Climate Change Adaptation Fund for the Niger Basin.
The authority says the fund’s legal texts and governing documents have already received ministerial approval, while the current work is intended to identify sustainable financing and help member states align national law with the regional framework. The basin spans nine countries and supports more than 200 million people.
Officials also reported that an existing adaptation program backed by the African Development Bank and other partners has restored about 16,000 hectares of degraded land and completed or begun more than 100 multipurpose water projects. Those figures are official program claims; no independent audit was released with the workshop statement.
