Authorities and news organizations reported substantial loss of life and many people missing, but totals changed sharply as remote areas were reached. Scientists cited by the Associated Press said the event may have temporarily blocked a river before the barrier failed; they cautioned that the precise sequence remains under investigation and that a direct climate attribution has not been established.

Relief work is continuing on both sides of the border. The United Nations said personnel were supporting the government-led response in Nepal and stood ready to assist in Tibet.
