Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese avant-garde artist whose polka-dot works, pumpkin sculptures and immersive infinity rooms became internationally recognized, died at a Tokyo hospital on August 14. Her official studio and museum announced her death on August 27. She was 97.
The official statement said Kusama continued painting until her final days. Her practice crossed painting, sculpture, installation, performance, fiction and poetry, and her mirrored environments helped bring participatory installation art to a mass audience. The announcement did not specify a cause of death.
The Yayoi Kusama Museum said its KUSAMA’s POP exhibition would continue through August 30. Institutions and public officials in Japan issued tributes after the announcement.
