The value of U.S. direct investment abroad rose by $438.1 billion during 2025 to $7.14 trillion, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Tuesday. The foreign direct-investment position in the United States increased by $266.0 billion to $5.86 trillion.\n\nEurope accounted for most of the increase in both directions. U.S. investment abroad rose by $350.2 billion in Europe, with the United Kingdom and Luxembourg contributing much of the gain. European investment in the United States increased by $182.4 billion; Germany posted the largest country-level increase, followed by Canada among all countries.\n\nManufacturing remained the largest industry share of foreign direct investment in the United States, representing 42.8 percent of the total. U.S. multinational enterprises reported $660.1 billion in income from their foreign affiliates, while foreign-owned U.S. affiliates reported $310.1 billion.\n\nThese figures measure direct-investment positions at historical cost.
