IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva used an October 7 curtain-raiser in Singapore to warn that high public debt, uneven access to artificial intelligence and conflict-driven commodity shocks are increasing pressure on governments.
She argued that policymakers should protect vulnerable households while strengthening fiscal discipline, controlling inflation where necessary and preparing workers and energy systems for the expansion of AI. Georgieva also cautioned that heavy investment in data centers and concentrated global exposure to major technology companies could amplify a market disappointment if earnings fail to justify spending.
The remarks set the agenda for the IMF–World Bank annual meetings scheduled in Bangkok from October 12 through October 18. They are policy warnings, not a new IMF forecast or binding directive to member governments.
