Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court restored the suspension of an installation license for the Volta Grande gold-mining project in Pará, reversing a lower-court step that had allowed the process to continue. The court said the suspension remains until a settlement between the parties is submitted and approved by a judge.

The decision concerns an installation license, not a final ruling on the project’s overall future. The Canadian company says the measure temporarily pauses the license pending a settlement hearing. The project has faced legal challenges over possible effects on Indigenous rights and the Xingu River region.

The immediate result is that construction authorization remains on hold; the court has not permanently canceled the project.
